Writing for private parties

With the exception of a couple blog posts and brief Facebook updates, I haven't written anything for public consumption yet, but that's about to change. Tomorrow evening, I'll be reading from the memoir I'm writing, The Last Guardian, at a members-only club called The Battery.

Yeah, I know, it's a little ironic, particularly given that the event is called "Gentrification and the Changing Nature of San Francisco," and the featured lefty writers are going to be pretty critical of these changes and the exclusionary vibe capturing our fair city. But it was set up by my friend Broke-Ass Stuart many months ago, and he's excited for the rabble-rousers to be headed into the belly of the beast. So am I, even if I expect to hear crickets at the end of my reading (well, we'll see).

Our Jan. 22 launch party for the Guardian-in-Exile issue hitting the streets that day will also be a private party, but for a very different reason. I arranged for us to rent InnerMission, a longtime favorite spot for the counterculture back when it was known as CELLspace, a venue that now has a date with the wrecking ball to get turned into luxury condos.

So the space feels right for us, but for permitting reason they can't do public parties, so ours will be a private VIP affair, although in the Guardian's world, everyone's a VIP. All Guardianistas are welcome and encouraged to attend, but you'll need an invite, so please hit me and other Guardian-in-Exile members to be added to the list.

BTW, the issue is looking great, I'm proud of the stories that I wrote and edited for it, and I can't wait to see and help distribute the final product next week.
